Holidays in Nafplio - Tolo

Nafplion, Argolida’s capital, is one of the most atmospheric cities of the entire Peloponnese, ideal for short breaks from Athens.

Nafplion is divided into the old and the new town. In the old town, quaint streets and old mansions “travel” visitors to bygone eras! In the heart of the old city, the cobbled Constitution Square is found. Decorated by majestic buildings like the one that housed the first Greek Parliament, testify the historical "character" of this town. The square offers relaxation in the beautiful stylish cafés and restaurants which surround it.

Nafplion is dominated by two castles; Akronafplia and Palamidi castles. Acronafplia’s fortress is built on a majestic, rocky peninsula, which used to be the Acropolis of Nafplion. The famous castle of Palamidi rises 216 meters above the city and impresses with its tall walls. This castle is of high historical significance, since in one of its bastions, Theodoros Kolokotronis, a Greek national hero was imprisoned. Apart from its historical value, Palamidi offers a stunning panoramic view over the bay of Argolis and the Nafplion city itself.

Landmark of the city is Mpourtzi; a fortress built on the small island of Agios Theodoros. The fortress is accessed by boat. The coastal road that lies ahead of Mpourtzi is ideal for relaxing strolls and bike rides. There, you will find plenty of restaurants, taverns and café/bars.

Arvanitias round, as locals call it, is one of the most romantic walks you can have, enjoying nature’s tranquility and the sea breeze. The ride starts at the end of the beach and ends up in the homonymous square, following the coastal promenade, around Acronafplia. Along the walkway, majestic rocks, "decorated" with prickly trees predominate.

After Arvanitias beach, you can continue your walk, eastern, at the Palamidi foothills, to Karathonas beach.

During your stay in Nafplion, do not forget to visit one of the ice cream parlors scattered in the old town; Nafplion is renowned for its delicious ice cream! Visiting as well the various rosary stores (Kombologadika) is a must.

This magical journey through history and time stops where the new town, which bears the features of any modern city, begins. Nevertheless, Nafplion, over the years, has managed to keep intact its nobility and charm, being one of the most romantic destinations in the Peloponnese, perfect for all seasons!

Beaches

One of the most popular beaches of Nafplion is Arvanitia, which is located within the city, just below Palamidi castle. Although small, it has all the amenities a visitor may want and is ideal for those who wish to avoid driving to a beach. Karathonas beach is the largest beach of the city. It is organized and has beach bars and taverns. This sandy beach, combined with the shallow waters, is an excellent choice for families with children.

Between Arvanitias and Karathonas, there is Neraki beach, a very small, without many human interventions, beach, which is accessible only on foot or by bike. Those who love exploring nature can leave the city of Nafplion and visit the beautiful beaches of the surrounding area, such as Psili Ammos, Kastraki, Plaka, Vivari, Agios Nikolaos-Kondilis, Candia and Kiveri beach
