Holidays in Nisyros island

The unpretentiously beautiful Nisyros belongs to the Dodecanese complex. The volcanic aura, the authentic villages and the beaches with the wild beauty, make up the profile of a place entirely unique and totally lovable!

Capital and port of Nisyros is the charming village of Mandraki, built in a hill on top of which the city Castle dominates. Cobbled streets, whitewashed houses with colorful balconies and picturesque squares with ornate and pebbled floors are the main features of this city. It is worth walking along the coast and to rest at Eleftheria (Freedom) Square, under the protective shade of large trees. In the square, you will find stylishly taverns and cafés. An important attraction of the capital is the Archaeological Museum and the Folk Museum Nisyros, housed in Irinis Patriki house. Do not forget to visit the medieval castle, which offers panoramic views of the city. Within the Castle, the monastery of Panagia Spiliani stands. Within walking distance from the capital, there are the hot springs in Loutra.

Just outside Mandraki village, there is Paleokastro, where the acropolis of the ancient city, with its impressive walls of volcanic stone unfolds. Worth to stay in Paleokastro until sunset time and enjoy a beautiful sunset!

During your stay in Nisyros, you can visit the mountainous village Emporeios which is nonchalantly perched on the rim of a caldera. Enjoy a coffee or lunch, overlooking the magnificent panoramic view of the caldera and the Prophet Elijah church. At the entrance of the village, you will find a cave, which, because of its heat, is considered a natural sauna! Of high interest is also Pantoniki Castle.

Equally beautiful is Nikia village, which seems to be perched on a hillside, offering breathtaking views of the caldera and the deep blue Aegean Sea. The restored mansions, the tiled roofs and the main square of Porta, with its oval shape and the beautiful pebble floors create a magical setting! In this beautiful square the imposing church of Isodia tis Theotokou (Presentation of Virgin Mary) stands. Major attractions of the village are the Monastery of Saint John the Theologian, as well as the fascinating Volcanological Museum of Nisyros.

Do not leave the island without visiting the volcano, with “Stefanos” the great crater. The experience will be unforgettable!

The tiny, almost perfectly round, island of Nisyros, with its whitewashed houses, the labyrinthine streets, the pebbled squares, the majestic castles, the medieval monasteries and the landscapes of fantastic beauty, are waiting to unfold their secrets, in a dreamy journey, full of new experiences and image alternations!
