Holidays in Koufonisia islands
The "exotic" Koufonisia consist of two islands, Pano and Kato Koufonisi (Upper and Lower Koufonisi) and belong to the complex of Small Cyclades and are rightly characterized by many as "Maldives of the Aegean". The once isolated and almost unknown "brother-islands" have now become a popular summer resort, synonymous with carefree and relaxed holidays!
In Koufonisia, whitewashed houses with blue shutters, whitewashed streets and beaches with turquoise waters create a dreamy scenery, reminiscent of the 60s! Here, you will find picturesque taverns which are famous for their fresh fish; atmospheric café/bars; ouzo taverns on the beach; and tourist shops. Wander in the picturesque village of Chora; an excellent example of the Cycladic architecture and have a minute at the church of St. George, the patron saint of the island. Do not miss visiting the outdoor Folk Museum which promises a magical journey through time. The shipyard, a space of vessels’ maintenance, is an important attraction located in Loutro. In this area a mill, which has been described as a pre-industrial Newer Monument, dominates. A second mill stands at the harbor entrance, waiting to greet visitors.
Koufonisia are ideal for leisurely and romantic walks as well as bike rides along the coastal road. According to locals, at nights with a full moon, if you notice Keros island’s ridge, just opposite Koufonisia, you will see the figure of a reclining woman! In Parianos area, you can enjoy one of the most idyllic sunsets of the Cyclades: the horizon is full of red colored shades whereas Naxos island accompanied by the surrounding islands look like a painting!
A small channel of 200 meters width separates Pano (Upper) from Kato (Lower) Koufonisi, which is nearly uninhabited, making it a real hideaway and ideal for contact with nature. It is worth visiting the simple but picturesque church of Panagia. During summer months, in Kato (Lower) Koufonisi a tavern operates.
Koufonisia are famous for the festivals and celebrations. It is worth attending the Fisherman's Festival, held every year in June, as well as the Feast of Panagia, in mid-August, in Kato Koufonisi.
During your stay in Koufonisia, it is worth visiting Keros island by boat, with its important archaeological finds; Antikeri and Glaronisi.
So, put in your backpack some, light, clothes, and get ready for an unforgettable holiday experience in Koufonisia; in this tiny paradise with the friendly atmosphere and the diffuse positive energy!
Koufonisia are famous for their beaches with fine sand and clear, turquoise waters reminiscent of the Caribbean!
In Pano (Upper) Koufonisi, the most popular beaches unfold in the south coast, such as Foinikas, Fanos and Platia Punta or Italida beach. At the beginning of Platia Punta there is the beach of Small Italida; a favorite nudists’ place. After Platia Punta, small coves and spectacular caves unfold, with most notable that of Pisina (Pool): crystal clear waters are surrounded by rocks, forming a natural pool! On the northeast side of the island the famous beach of Pori, with golden sand and emerald waters stands out. This beach is a favorite place for windsurfers. Behind Pori, there are the famous coastal caves: tiny beaches and cliffs carved by the Cycladic wind and sea saltiness compose an image that will leave you speechless! Those who love adventure, should look for Gala, an open cave, where sea water enters through a narrow passage, forming a small creek. Reaching Gala can be rough at some points, but the picture you see when you finally arrive at the beach will definitely reward you!
Those who love tranquility and isolation will love the beaches in Kato Koufonisi. The most popular is Nero (Water) beach. Equally beautiful are Laki, Detis and Pezoulia beaches.
