Explore Xanthi
The multicultural city of Xanthi unfolds at the foot of Rhodope Mountain, carrying a history that goes centuries back!
Reference point of Xanthi is its imposing clock, which rises in the central Republic Square. You can walk around city's shopping streets and enjoy your coffee or drink in one of its lively café/bars on the "beach", at Kosynthos riverside. Important attractions are the famous warehouses, architectural masterpieces which dominate downtown’s perimeter, revealing the splendor of past times.
Continue your journey with a visit to Xanthi’s historic heart: the atmospheric old town. Embellished with beautiful mansions, the old town is an outdoor museum, full of colors and aromas! The peculiarity of this town will fascinate you: every house is aesthetically unique, but at the same time in harmony with the rest of the residential complex! It is worth getting lost in the cobbled streets and admiring the care with which they have made almost everything: the sidewalks, the enclosed balconies, the doors, the windows, the skylights, the ironwork... You will be thrilled by the old inns scattered in the old town, which now are transformed into modern hotels. During your stroll in this cinematic scenery, your attention will spur the building of “Christos Pavlidis” Municipal Gallery, with its excellent west Macedonian and Epirus’ architecture, as well as the mansion with the iridescent stone, which now houses the Town Hall. An important attraction is the Folk Museum, which used to be Kougioumtzoglou family mansion, as well as the manor house of Isaac Daniel, where Manos Hadjidakis; a Greek composer who received an Academy Award for Best Original Song, spent his childhood. In the old town you will find traditional cafés and picturesque taverns to have some raki and meze.
Kosynthos river divides the city in two parts; the western part, where the old and the modern city are and the eastern part, where the Samakov district unfolds. This small settlement, nestled on a hillside, will seduce you with its simplicity. Browse through its narrow streets and enjoy the characteristic ouzo, olive trees and wood aromas.
If you love sightseeing, do not forget to visit Kromniko village, which seems to have been trapped in time! If you are lucky, you may encounter beautiful wild horses, descendants of those liberated by village’s inhabitants, before they abandon the place. An extraordinary experience is a tour in the mountainous Pomak villages. The breathtaking scenery and the colors and scents will take you to a magical world! One of the most beautiful Pomak villages is Medoussa, unfolding along Kompsatos river. Equally charming is the village of Thermes, where, apart from the famous baths, you can find the impressive relief of Mithra god carved on a rock.
If you are attracted by adventure, at the wider area, you will have the opportunity to indulge in various activities. Do not miss riverside hiking, crossing the Straits of Nestos, in a "deafening" silence and within a nature that thrives! Alternatively, you can make this fairytale journey by train starting from Toxotes village towards Stavroupolis, following the tracks which the famous Orient Express once used! If you love water, it is worth canoe-kayaking or rafting at the Straits of Nestos, following the legendary river’s meandering.
Of particular interest is Xanthi’s Carnival, with Tzaros burning, as well as the famous Old Town’s Festival, held every year in early September. Apart from that, unique experience is shopping at Saturday's bazaar which attracts countless visitors from northern Greece, as well as from neighboring Bulgaria. It is a flea market with a special character where marketers speaking different languages, from different religions and origin, coexist in a unique mosaic of cultures!
"Lady of Thrace" is a magical place, with a mysterious aura, which carries up to date the signs of its long history. At this crossroads of civilizations, you will see the West meeting the East, tying this way yesterday with today, in a harmonious manner, like a fairytale...
