Holidays in Lasithi

Charming Lasithi unfolds in the eastern part of Crete, reserving countless surprises to the visitor. On the numerous beautiful "corners" of the county, Agios Nikolaos, Sitia and Ierapetra are included.

Capital of Lasithi Prefecture is Agios Nikolaos; the cosmopolitan city with diffuse aristocratic aura, which is perched in the arms of a picturesque bay. Elegant neoclassical buildings, beautiful squares, numerous shops, restaurants and taverns, and cosmopolitan beaches compose the profile of Lasithi. Its trademark is the fabulous Voulismeni Lake; the motionless waters, the fishing boats and the green hills which surround it, create a picture of unparalleled beauty! You can follow the paved path which stretches at the south point of the lake and leads to a small pine park, ideal for relaxation and tranquility. From there, you can enjoy the panoramic view of the city. You can also walk at the paved 28, October street, where you will find many shops. Of great interest is also Nearchos square, with mosaic sea patterns. Amongst the major local attractions the Archaeological and Folklore Museum are included. During your stay in Agios Nikolaos, do not forget to visit Spinalonga Island by boat and walk through the ruined buildings, which will take you back to the turbulent history of this small island.

The picturesque and welcoming Sitia, homeland of Vitsentzos Kornaros; a Greek famous poet, is built on a hillside and is recommended for those who prefer quieter and relaxed holidays. Reference point is the port of the city. The promenade with palm trees is ideal for romantic walks, especially at full moon nights. There, you will find taverns and café/bars. It is worth walking in the narrow streets of the Old Town, with its traditional houses and flowery gardens. Major attractions are the Castle of Kazarma, the Archaeological Museum of Sitia, the Folklore Museum and the Platyskinos Vaulted Tomb. During your stay in Sitia, you can visit the Archaeological Site of Trypitos, which lies on a small peninsula, east of the city and is thought to be the ancient town of Sitia (Eteia). Of great interest is the Prehistoric Necropolis in Agia Fotia. During your stay in Sitia, do not miss the famous palm forest in Vai; one of the most beautiful sights of Crete!

Touristic Ierapetra is the southernmost city of Greece and unfolds across the African coast. Benchmark of this sunny city is the coastal road, which, after its reconstruction is ideal for relaxing walks, tasting local delicacies or drinking raki overlooking the sea. Trademark of Ierapetra is the fortress in Kales, which dominates the entrance of the harbor, and is used today as a venue for cultural events. The fort is an ideal spot for romantic walks, especially during sunset time. Visit the building of the old Ottoman School, which houses the Archaeological Collection of Ierapetra. Do not forget to visit the small, old town, in Kato Mera. Walk on the quiet, picturesque alleyways and shop handmade souvenirs from the traditional outdoor workshops. Major attractions in this old city are Napoleon house, the Mosque, the Ottoman Fountain and the Old Church of Afentis Chirstos (Lord Christ). Ierapetra is famous for its vivid nightlife. Reference points are the taverns on the beach and the bars located in the streets of the city. During summer months, Ierapetra hosts Kyrveia cultural events. Finally, the city is an ideal base for those wishing to explore the south coast of Crete and enjoy the charm of the Libyan Sea.
