On a hill above the old town of Kalamata, the imposing Frankish castle dominates. It is believed that, in the exact place where the castle nowadays is, used to be the citadel of ancient Farai. This is also the place where the legendary "Princess Isabeau", a character from Angelos Terzakis’; a Greek writer; novel lived! Your attention will be spurred by the traces of the Lion of St. Mark relief (symbol of Venice), which can still be seen today above the entrance gate. Besides its historical significance, the castle offers stunning views of the historic city center. At its southern end, there is a small theater, in which, during summer months, performances and cultural events are hosted.
